What Is a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty — more commonly called a tummy tuck — is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure for achieving a flat, smoother-looking abdomen. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from the stomach and can (in most patients) restore muscles that have become weakened or separated.

Although not a substitute for weight loss, a tummy tuck can fix a protruding or sagging abdomen for patients who are otherwise proportionate and of a healthy body weight.

How Is a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty Performed?

Your tummy tuck procedure will be performed at a certified surgical center under general anesthesia. After making his incisions, Dr. Groves will loosen the skin and tighten the underlying muscles with sutures. Following the muscle repair portion of your abdominoplasty, Dr. Groves will remove excess fat and stretch the skin over the incision line, trimming away the excess skin.

What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty?

You can expect a tighter, flatter tummy following your surgery. Your clothes will fit better, and your body will appear more youthful. Patients who have undergone a tummy tuck also report feeling more confident about their appearance.

What Is the Recovery Like After a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty?

Your abdomen will be sore immediately following your tummy tuck, but Dr. Groves will provide you with the appropriate pain medications to make you more comfortable. You will likely need to rest in bed for several days, so it’s important that you have someone to help you at home.

Your incision will be covered with a sterile dressing to keep it clean and protected, and you will be asked to wear a compression garment to control swelling. You may also have drains placed to remove excess fluid and blood. Your sutures will typically be absorbable, so you don’t have to worry about having them removed.

Dr. Groves will follow up on your recovery and provide you with any assistance or information you may need.

Most patients can return to work in about a week while more strenuous activities can typically be resumed at approximately one month post-surgery.

Is a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty Right for Me?

Eating right and exercising and not getting the results you want can be frustrating. Even if you are losing weight, you may feel disappointed when certain fat deposits — such as a protruding lower abdomen — just won’t budge. If this sounds familiar, you may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck.

Other considerations for a tummy tuck are:

  • You shouldn’t smoke. Smoking slows the healing process and can increase the risk of complications.
  • If you have significant fat around your internal organs, you might have to postpone your tummy tuck until after you have lost some weight.
  • You should be healthy and in good physical shape.
  • You should be finished having children, as pregnancy can cause the fat deposits to return.
  • Scars from previous surgeries on the abdomen could affect your candidacy for abdominoplasty
  • You are at a stable weight. Abdominoplasty is not suitable for obese patients.
