Body Lift in Macon, GA
Losing a significant amount of weight is an admirable accomplishment, but many people find that they are left with a considerable amount of loose skin that doesn’t seem to fit their new body. If this sounds familiar to you, you may want to consider a body lift. Dr. Joshua R. Groves, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, performs body lifts at the Georgia Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. The office serves patients in Macon and Warner Robins, GA, as well as the surrounding communities in Bibb County and Houston County.
What Is a Body Lift?
A full body lift involves removing loose, sagging skin from various areas of the body and may include surgical reshaping of the arms, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, groin, chest, back, and breasts, depending on each patient’s individual needs. Body lifts are ideal for patients who have lost a substantial amount of weight or for women whose bodies have been significantly altered by pregnancy.
Because the skin is pulled taut during the procedure, body lift surgery can help improve the appearance of cellulite, dimples, and other skin irregularities.
How Is a Body Lift Performed?
Body lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between four and seven hours. Dr. Groves will remove excess skin and fat and reshape the underlying tissue before pulling the remaining skin together and stitching it closed. At the doctor’s discretion, liposuction may also be performed in conjunction with a body lift to ensure optimal results are achieved.
Is a Body Lift Right for Me?
If you have loose, sagging skin and want to restore your body to a more natural shape, you may be interested in a body lift. In order to be a good candidate for the procedure, you should meet the following criteria:
- You are in good physical health with no chronic medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes
- You have realistic expectations
- You don’t smoke
- The underlying layers of fat (beneath the sagging skin) are relatively thin
- Your weight has stabilized, and you have maintained the weight for a period of several months
What Is the Recovery Like After a Body Lift?
The length of your recovery depends on the exact procedures you undergo. For a full body lift, you may be required to stay in the hospital or under the care of a skilled nurse for a few days following your procedure. You may have drains placed at your incision sites, and you may be asked to wear compression bandages or garments.
Before you go home, Dr. Groves will make sure that you and your caregiver receive detailed instructions about post-surgical care, such as:
- How to empty and reset your drains
- How to recognize potential complications
- Normal symptoms you can expect during your recovery
- When you can resume normal activities
