What is Scar Revision?
A scar revision can refer to one of a number of techniques that is designed to drastically reduce the appearance of scars via:
- The use of topical ointments
- Laser therapy
- bioCorneum® – an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of scars on the face or body. It consists of a silicone gel that also contains an SPF of 30, providing exceptional protection and healing benefits to the skin. When used immediately following surgery, the product may even prevent scars from forming. bioCorneum® works on all types of scars, including raised scars.
- Laser Genesis – an effective treatment for the removal of acne scars or scars that are caused by burns, injury, trauma, or surgery. The procedure involves the use of a special handpiece to deliver laser waves into the deepest layers of your skin. Several treatments may be needed to provide you with the best possible results, and each treatment should be scheduled around four weeks apart to give skin plenty of time to recover.
Benefits of Scar Revision
Many people elect to undergo scar revision because they have unsightly scars on their hands, face, or another area of the body that is difficult to cover up. Some raised scars may also be uncomfortable because they interfere with clothing. By having scar revision performed, you can regain your self-confidence and eliminate any discomfort that is caused by your scar rubbing against your clothes.
Requirements for Scar Revision
Nearly anyone can use a topical cream or undergo a laser procedure. There are stricter requirements for anyone wishing to undergo surgery, as certain health conditions may increase the difficulty of the procedure.
Is Scar Revision Right for Me?
You could be a good candidate for scar revision if you are bothered by one or more unusual scars, but otherwise have healthy skin that is likely to respond well to treatment.
How Involved is the Scar Revision Procedure?
Topical ointments and laser therapy are both non-invasive treatments; however, surgery will require at least local anesthesia and one or more incisions. The recovery time will be much longer with surgery.
How Long is the Recovery After Scar Revision?
No recovery is needed when using topical ointments, although you must be on the lookout for any unusual discomfort. There may be some slight swelling present after a laser treatment, but this will subside within a few days. Surgery may result in the area feeling tender to the touch, slightly numb, or tingling. Over-the-counter medication could be needed to reduce swelling and help you manage your discomfort.
How Much Does Scar Revision Cost?
Topical ointments are fairly inexpensive while laser treatments and surgery cost more. The cost of your scar revision will depend on the procedure that’s needed. During your consultation, we will discuss the cost, and go over our payment options to find one that best suits your needs.
Some procedures may be covered by medical insurance. Our staff is experienced in matters pertaining to insurance, and will work with your carrier to get you maximum coverage. In the event a procedure is not covered, we offer financing through CareCredit® and Alphaeon™Credit . We will be happy to assist in filling out the necessary application, or you may apply on the CareCredit® website prior to your appointment. We work with SunTrust Bank to offer low, fixed interest rate loans to patients with good to excellent credit for all cosmetic procedures, and also accept cash, personal checks, MasterCard®, Visa®, American Express®, and Discover® Card.
