Breast Reduction in Macon, GA
Not all women desire larger breasts. In fact, many of our patients here at the Georgia Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery are bothered by overly large breasts that can even cause them back or neck pain. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Joshua R. Groves has helped women in Macon, Warner Robins, Houston County, Bibb County and the surrounding area eliminate a variety of health problems through breast reduction surgery.
What is a Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery involves removing skin, muscle, and fat in the chest area in an effort to make the bosom smaller. It is an intense procedure that requires general anesthesia and several hours in our recovery room being monitored. More involved breast reductions could even result in an overnight hospital stay.
Benefits of a Breast Reduction
Not only do overly large breasts cause women to be uncomfortable, but they can also make buying clothes difficult. Some women are also bothered by the unwanted attention that comes with having very large breasts. This is one cosmetic procedure that is often covered by insurance, so it is also one of the most affordable. Those who have had breast reductions in the past report less pain and greater self-confidence.
Requirements for a Breast Reduction
You need to have equal amounts of healthy tissue in each breast to ensure a uniform appearance. As such, you may need to have a mammogram performed to check for cysts, lumps, or other abnormalities. Tell Dr. Groves if you are smoking or taking blood-thinning medications. He may ask you to stop these for a week or so beforehand in order to reduce the odds of complications.
Is a Breast Reduction Right for Me?
You may want to seriously consider a breast reduction if you have:
- Frequent back or neck pain that cannot be attributed to any other cause
- Difficulty finding clothing that fits you properly, especially bathing suits and undergarments
- Self-esteem issues because other people frequently stare at your chest area or make unwelcome comments
How Involved is a Breast Reduction Procedure?
A breast reduction is a complicated procedure that may take as long as three to four hours. You will be given general anesthesia, allowing you to sleep comfortably while Dr. Groves performs his work. After surgery, you will be monitored by our staff, and may be given fluids or medications intravenously to help you manage your discomfort and prevent infection.
How Long is the Recovery After a Breast Reduction?
The recovery period for a breast lift can be as long as six to eight weeks, depending upon the amount of tissue removed. During this time, you should wear a good support bra at all times, even when you are sleeping. Dr. Groves may also insert a tiny tube beneath your skin to help with drainage. If so, this tube must be kept clean and dry, in which case you will also need to take baths and not showers.
How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?
Since a breast reduction procedure is tailored to meet your needs, your cost will also be different from that of any other patient. During your consultation, we will discuss the cost, and go over our payment options to find one that best suits your needs.
Some procedures may be covered by medical insurance. Our staff is experienced in matters pertaining to insurance, and will work with your carrier to get you maximum coverage. In the event a procedure is not covered, we offer financing through CareCredit® and Alphaeon™Credit.
